tim hecker live: worth seeing?

Postby smapdi on Thu Mar 11, 2010 3:06 am

has anyone ever had the chance? i just found out he's playing in iowa city (of all places) early in april. it'd be a bit of a drive (3+ hrs) but he's never played anywhere in the midwest u.s., not even chicago. any input would be of interest.

i've seen a live video of him performing, the only visuals you get are a glowing apple logo from his laptop. don't go to watch, just go for the soundscapes and to (possibly) talk to him after the show. at least that's what i've come to realize.

I saw him live, dude wore a mask the entire time, basically just him at his workstation, don't think there were any visuals set up, and the crowd just stood still and stared... but the show was excellent, and the atmosphere was great... also got to see merzbow that night, so I can't complain ;)

saw him and fennesz on a double bill. great show. not a ton to look out, but the sound was wonderfully LOUD. you could feel the waves of sound hitting you.

Exactly... brought an 'un-initiated' friend to the show and he got physically ill during the merzbow performance, guessing partly due to the intense low frequency sounds, high volume and the acoustics in the small-ish venue... even I was feeling a little rough afterwards... but we both agreed that it made the show THAT MUCH BETTER

i saw that show too - that was 5 years ago! super into the tim hecker set. watching that fennesz set was embarrassing though... due to the visuals. so rare that visuals work for me. there may not be much to 'see' live, but compared to jamming a cd in the stereo?! that's comparing avatar 3d imax to iphone avatar. live = unpredictability = energy. and you never know what you might miss - wouldn't you be pissed if you skipped it and heard he did back flips with no pants on? i hear Tim Hecker might be coming to seattle again...

Saw him here in SF a few years back and it was great. Nice and loud but still warm and dreamy... not much to look at, but the sound from the multiple speaker setup was fantastic! Highly recommended, especially if the place where it will be has a good sound system/environment.

Hmmm, he's playing over here in May, but the venue is definitely not a place with a good soundsystem/environment. Bands usually finish by 11:30, and the place turns into rave central by midnight. Hardly ideal.

is it in twisted pepper? wouldn't let the venue put me off....although i maybe would if i had
to travel for it. that place is weird..sometimes sound is real good, sometimes it's dreadful

they have a really good sound system though. it's not junk. i dunno if it's the soundmen.

we've never had trouble there, but i've seen is pretty bad for some people - legion of two
was particularly bad there - could have been their setup though. hopefully gonna make
hecker anyway

Yeah, Twisted Pepper. Wouldn't just be dodgy venue, it'd be travelling, like you said, and the fact it's right in the middle of exam season & I don't have a timetable yet. Hopefully it will work out for me.... Sucks that Legion of Two sucked, btw; their album is pretty good.
